The Chinese embassy in Kazakhstan has warned its citizens to take precautions against an outbreak of pneumonia in the country, which it says is more deadly than Covid-19.

In a statement to its official WeChat account on Thursday night, the embassy said there had been a "significant increase" in cases in the cities of Atyrau , Aktobe and Shymkent since mid-June.

Pneumonia in Kazakhstan would have killed 1,772 people in the first half of the year, with 628 deaths in June alone, including Chinese citizens, according to the embassy. "The death rate from the disease is much higher than from Covid-19 pneumonia ," he says.

It is not clear whether the pneumonia is caused by a coronavirus- related virus or by a different strain. The embassy reports that the Kazakh Ministry of Health and other health institutions were carrying out a "comparative study", but have not yet reached a conclusion.

According to a report on Tuesday by Kazinform , the Kazakh state news agency, the number of pneumonia cases "increased 2.2 times in June compared to the same period in 2019."

Kazakhstan denies the outbreak: "It is false news"

On Friday, however, the Kazakh Ministry of Health called the Chinese media reports based on the embassy statement "false news."

The ministry has said its counts of bacterial, fungal, and viral pneumonia infections, which also include cases of unclear causes, were in line with World Health Organization guidelines .

"The information published by some Chinese media about a new type of pneumonia in Kazakhstan is incorrect," says the ministry.

Kazakhstan has recorded more than 50,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 , including 264 deaths. The number of new cases rose to a daily record of 1,962 on Thursday, Kazinform reports.
