Last year's typhoon No. 19 flooded training such as closing the sluice of the Tama River Tokyo Komae July 8th 17:09

During typhoon No. 19 last year, a training was held in Komae City, Tokyo, where flood damage was occurring around the sluices of the Tama River, to check the procedure for opening and closing the sluices and draining in preparation for heavy rain.

In Komae City, Tokyo, typhoon No. 19 last October flooded the water around two locks on the embankment of the Tama River, flooding approximately 300 houses above and below the floor.

On the 8th, drills were conducted at these locks to check the response in case of heavy rain, and about 20 people including city staff and local fire brigade participated.

At the beginning, a person in charge of the city explained the operation such as closing the sluice to prevent backflow of water from the river when the water level of the Tama River rose.

When the sluices are closed, it will not be possible to drain water from the residential area to the river, so the fire team used a pump truck and a hose to check the procedure for draining water to the river so that water would not overflow from the manhole.

Komae City plans to install water level gauges, cameras, and sensors for checking if water is flowing backwards at these two sluices later this month, and plans to strengthen the monitoring system in preparation for heavy rain.

Toshikatsu Iwasaki, Chief of Sewer Division, Komae City, said, “I am deeply sorry for the great damage that has occurred in Kyushu and other areas. Since Kamae also suffered damage last year, be prepared to deal with heavy rains in the future. I want to go."
