In 1994, 49-year-old Wen Jinlu (a pseudonym Jinguang Dao) founded "Riyue Qigong" in Henan and packaged himself as a "master", proclaiming that mankind will have a catastrophe in 2000. Wen Jinlu used the identity of the leader to deceive the believers for huge amounts of money in the name of accepting disciples, spreading divination, divining, eliminating diseases, removing diseases, and selling books, and fabricated "yin and yang double cultivation to increase the power" to confuse believers and adopt spiritual control and coercive methods. Eight female believers were raped multiple times and caused two of them to become pregnant and aborted multiple times. The Luohe City Intermediate People's Court heard that the defendant Wen Jinlu established the "Sun Moon Qigong" cult organization, deified and promoted himself, used manufacturing and disseminating superstition and heresies to confuse and deceive others, develop and control members, and endanger society. After the cult organization was banned, Wen Jinlu resumed the cult organization and undermined the implementation of national laws and administrative regulations. Wen Jinlu successively developed more than 250 members of the organization, and donated more than 8.19 million yuan through donations from believers, which was used to build organizational bases, purchase vehicles, and squander themselves.
The defendants Gao Lihong, Guo Junzhao, Chen Xian, Wen Lijun, Cao Junxia, and Cao Hengfei were instructed by Wen Jinlu to participate in activities of cult organizations, spread superstitions and heresies, develop members of the organization, gather money for Wen Jinlu and the cult organization, and undermine national laws and administration. After sentencing in the first instance, Wen Jinlu pleaded guilty and refused to appeal.
