Bad news on the employment front in the Rennes metropolis. The French specialist in image technologies Technicolor is preparing to set up a social plan which could lead to the loss of 110 jobs by the end of the year at the Cesson-Sévigné site near Rennes. "After having sold its patent division in 2018 (-50 employees), then its Research and innovation division in 2019 (-180 employees), Technicolor is preparing to sacrifice its French Research and Development teams in the connected home division", indicates the intersyndicale and the elected members of the CSE.

"After asking for reductions in pay during confinement, Technicolor's management is increasing: 110 positions out of a workforce of 283 are today targeted by a redundancy plan announced on July 2! Added the press release. When questioned, the management confirmed this project "of organizational development which would result in the abolition of 110 positions, by the end of 2020".

The evolving set-top box market

The management of the company explains these cuts in the workforce by "deep and structural transformations" in the market for the design and supply of digital decoders, "with the decline in the use of traditional television and the appearance of new uses of video consumption with streaming and VOD which replace the use of traditional decoders ”.

In addition to this market development, there is the emergence of new entrants, particularly from Asia, "whose cost structures allow them to charge prices much lower than those of traditional players", with the result "a fall of 25% in the market ( in value) of the design and supply of digital decoders between 2017 and 2020 ”.

Also, in France, the R & D Division of the Rennes site, specializing in this type of traditional decoders, "has seen for several years the volume of its activities decrease and its competitiveness decrease".
