Develop and enhance fish farming in Côte d'Ivoire
By: Sayouba Traoré
Fish is the primary source of animal protein consumed by Ivorians. Domestic consumption varies between 250,000 tonnes and 300,000 tonnes per year. As for national production (industrial fishing and artisanal fishing included), it hovers around 60,000 tonnes. Despite a natural potential in fishery production, this coastal country imports up to 67% to cover the needs of the populations.

However, according to FAO figures, Côte d'Ivoire has kilometers of coastline on the ocean, nearly 150,000 ha of lagoons, 350,000 ha of lakes and many shallows conducive to the establishment of aquaculture farms, as well as a rich aquatic fauna containing more than a hundred families of fish, of which several species have a certain aquaculture potential.
Faced with such dependence of the sector vis-à-vis the outside world, it is therefore not surprising that this country is setting up programs and projects aimed at developing and promoting fish farming. The public authorities direct their actions towards the development of artisanal fishing and, in particular, towards aquaculture. They thus hope to generate income in the rural environment, to fix young people there, to fight poverty which concerns women as a priority.
