  • Nine associations request the abandonment of all new road projects in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine.
  • This collective must gather 2,000 signatures to have its right of arrest debated before the departmental council.
  • The department defends itself by justifying the usefulness of certain road projects and announces a real change in its mobility policy.

They are nine associations from the four corners of the department to have found an agreement to say "stop to new road infrastructures" in Ille-et-Vilaine. All committed for the defense of the environment, they have just exercised their “right to question” offered by the departmental council to try to make their voice heard. The collective calls for a halt to all major road projects which it deems responsible for the degradation of "water, air, living things, climate and health" and "in contradiction with the challenges of tomorrow and the world after ”.

In its text, the collective therefore requests "the abandonment of any program of new road infrastructure", unless there are compelling reasons for safety. “The road encourages the car. Investments should rather be made on the cycling network, for example, ”says Jacques Le Letty, president of Vitré Tuvalu. He fights against the road project which aims to bypass Vitré but crosses "a drinking water catchment point".

Already 100! In a few days, already 100 signatories to the interpellation right of the department @ille_et_vilaine in order to get off the road and abandon the big road projects of # Vitré #Chateaubourg https://t.co/NTbV0OYOKb pic.twitter.com/dkEXXblzWw

When questioned, the department defends its vision. “At Vitré, as everywhere, we intervene at the request of elected officials. The project foresees a better flow of traffic. It is a real challenge for the city to no longer see all these flows pass through the city center, ”explains Bernard Marquet. The elected representative in charge of regional development explains that the developments dedicated to soft modes are even dependent on this work, as "it is impossible to do it currently".

New “founder” mobility plan soon to be voted

If they make Vitré one of the pillars of their dispute, the associations target several projects in the department, in particular in Châteaubourg and Fougères where fragile natural spaces would be threatened by these road projects. "We have the impression that the living has become consumable," says Laurent Perrin, of the Rennes association Alternatiba. There too, the department defends itself and sends back the associations to the next session of its assembly which will meet on July 7 and 8 to vote on its “2025 mobility plan”. “It is founder. We are no longer talking about infrastructure but mobility. Above all, we want to work on the existing network, improve connectivity and develop cycling facilities, ”says André Lefeuvre, elected delegate for roads.

To have their right of interpellation treated in the departmental assembly, the collective of associations will have to collect at least 2,000 signatures in the next six months. In less than a week, it recorded almost 150. “Citizens are ready for change if they are given the means. But we do everything for the car and we abandon the railway, "regrets Pauline Pennober. The activist of the Association of Water and Rivers of Brittany is optimistic. "The 2,000 signatures, we will have them". Verdict in six months.
