"Down the legs" (2/10): speech freed to revolt and denounce

In May 2019, a series of rapes followed by murders moved Senegal. These events provoked a public debate on sexual violence in a country strongly rooted in religion and traditions. For me, Kpénahi Traoré, this simple fact of being able to finally speak of this violence suffered by women was already a step forward, however small it may be.

Feminist activists have decided to step out of the shadows and be heard. Gathered in collectives to say "doyna", "dafadoye" "stop", "that's enough", in Wolof. On May 25, 2019, a big march is organized in Dakar to denounce sexual violence and ask for the criminalization of rape in Senegal when the #MeToo and #BalanceTonPorc movements had just created a shock wave by freeing the voice of women in the world. in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. Being a woman and African, it was an opportunity to say that in Africa too, women were not spared.
