It is improving, but it is not yet that. The Fraud Repression said in a statement on Thursday that the level of chemicals in certain disposable diapers for babies had dropped significantly since a warning in January 2019.

To carry out her investigation, she sifted through 32 references of baby protections, shelled in her laboratories to verify that the health thresholds defined by the National Food Safety Agency, environment and work.

“No health thresholds have been exceeded. These findings confirm the marked improvement in the quality of the references present on the market. No allergens or pesticide residue were found. Decreases in contaminations of dioxins and furans, PCB-DL (chlorinated compounds) and PAHs have also been noted, making it possible to no longer find that the thresholds are exceeded for these substances, "explained the Directorate-General for Competition, Consumption and the repression of fraud (DGCCRF).

Eighteen months ago, a report from the Health Security Agency warned of long-term "risks" to the health of babies wearing disposable diapers. At issue: the presence of chemicals in these protections, which had prompted the government to demand action from the manufacturers.

High level of an irritant compound

“Additional improvements are however expected for three references for which the measured formaldehyde content exceeds 10% of the health threshold. The situation does not justify ordering the recall of the products but the operators concerned are asked to deepen their diagnoses within six months, ”argued the Fraud Repression.

Regarding formaldehyde, an irritant compound, we are far from the count. Only six of the 32 references guarantee an attendance rate of less than 10%. For 23 of them, the Health Agency cannot exclude an overshoot beyond 10%.

The Pampers Premium Protection, Marmailles Plus and Moina Zaza ranges are thus highlighted. The rate of the first two brands is between 10 and 25% for this substance, for the third, sold exclusively in Mayotte and made in China according to Le Parisien , this figure varies between 25 and 50%.

“The traces do not come from our layers but from the outside. ANSES recognizes that on this type of very tiny traces, it is necessary to perfect the analyzes. Components can also be found in the air. There is a possible margin of error, "defended Antoine Giuntini, director of BabyCare at Pampers, interviewed by the daily.

The professional union of industrial hygiene indicated for its part that "the manufacturers of baby diapers welcome the results of tests carried out by the DGCCRF which confirm that baby diapers are safe products". But he regrets, however, that while "even when she concludes that the health thresholds are not exceeded and declares that the diapers she has tested are safe, she communicates in parallel on results that take into account '' other exposure factors (environment, food). These results in no way allow us to judge the safety of the composition and use of the product ”.

Conversely, five references are completely in the green for eight families of chemical substances. The Health Agency announced in January that it would propose in October 2020 to Europe to reduce the number of chemicals present in the diapers.
