Xinhua News Agency, Hong Kong, July 2 (Xinhua) The Information Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced on the 2nd that Chen Guoji, director of the Chief Executive’s Office of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, had been sworn in as Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s National Security Council in the afternoon.

  In accordance with the relevant provisions of the "Law of the People's Republic of China on the Maintenance of National Security," and on the nomination of the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Lin Zhengyue, the State Council decided on July 2, 2020: to appoint Chen Guoji as Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's National Security Committee.

  Regarding the appointment of Chen Guoji, Lin Zhengyue said that Chen Guoji, as the chief of the Chief Executive’s Office, has performed well in leading the office. He is convinced that Chen Guoji has the ability to serve as the Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s National Security Committee and leads the Secretariat to support the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s National Security Committee. Take heavy responsibility for maintaining national security.

  The National Security Law of Hong Kong stipulates that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region shall establish a National Security Committee to be responsible for the national security affairs of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, shall bear the main responsibility for national security, and shall accept the supervision and accountability of the Central People’s Government.

  The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s National Security Council is chaired by the Chief Executive. Its members include the Chief Secretary for Administration, the Financial Secretary, the Legal Secretary, the Secretary for Security, the Commissioner of Police, the head of the National Security Department of the Police Force, and immigration. Division Chief, Customs Chief and Chief Executive's Office.

  The Secretariat of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s National Security Council shall be headed by the Secretary-General.

  The Hong Kong National Security Law was published in the Hong Kong SAR on June 30, 2020 and came into effect.
