  • The announced arrival of 5G in France is the subject of many debates.
  • The subject was invited in the municipal campaign as in Rennes where the mayor has adopted the principle of a health impact study.
  • Thirty anti-5G activists demonstrated on Tuesday afternoon to demand a moratorium on the experimentation currently being carried out by Orange and Nokia at Rennes station.

Its launch in France is expected by the end of the year. Before that, the auctions for the allocation of frequencies, initially scheduled for mid-April but postponed due to the coronavirus, will have been held between 20 and 30 September. Not yet a reality, 5G has in any case invited itself into the debate on municipal elections. And the breakthrough of the Greens during this election could curb the projects of the giants of the mobile phone.

Even if their skills remain limited on the subject, some mayors are in any case feet in the dish. This is the case of the new environmental mayor of Bordeaux Pierre Hurmic who called the day after his election to "a real debate on 5G" in order to alert his fellow citizens on "the dangers" of this new technology. Before him, the socialist mayor of Nantes Johanna Rolland also promised a moratorium on 5G which is currently being tested by SFR in the city of the dukes.

A health impact study will be carried out in Rennes

Its neighbor in Rennes is also testing this mobile network of the future through Orange and Nokia, which have been testing 5G hotspots since the end of the year in order to download movies and series at high speed. the north forecourt of the station that around thirty activists gathered this Tuesday at the end of the afternoon to demand a moratorium on this experiment. "We are conducting tests when we have no data on the health and environmental impact of 5G", denounces Philippe Martin, president of the association Alter Ondes 35, who is also worried about the risks of "coping and intrusion into privacy ”.

In the Breton capital, the subject has also entered the political sphere. After its merger with environmentalists, Mayor Nathalie Appéré thus accepted the principle of a health impact study, without opting for a moratorium as in Nantes. "But we are hopeful that the lines will move under pressure from citizens," said Philippe Martin.

When questioned, the operator Orange refused to comment, awaiting the allocation of frequencies in September. According to our information, the experiment was however temporarily put on hold since confinement.
