The coronavirus pandemic will have got the better of the beauty contest. As Outremer360 ° reports (relaying news from Radio 1), there will be no Miss Tahiti election this year. Consequently, Matahari Bousquet, the title holder in 2019, will keep her crown for two years.

This decision comes after the reopening of Polynesia to international tourism, and the fear of a second wave. The election of Miss Tahiti generally attracting several thousand people, the committee decided to cancel it in order to avoid too large a rally.

A TV show to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the competition

“Miss Tahiti is a popular election, it is 3,000 people, the candidates want to have their families with them. Organizing an election without all of that, just to have a candidate for Miss France, is really not our objective, "explained Leiana Faugerat, director of the Miss Tahiti committee. However, the committee plans to organize a retrospective TV program to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the competition.

And who to represent Tahiti in the Miss France competition this year (if it is held)? One of Matahari Bousquet's runners-up could participate, if the committee led by Sylvie Tellier accepts.
