There is in the hanging clothes that adorn patios and facades a kind of spell. A subliminal magnetism that invites those who set their eyes on them to draw with their imaginations the lives of those who wear and wear them. During the months of confinement, the balconies have been, literally and metaphorically, the window to the world to peer into . Now that life is gradually beginning to return to the streets, the applause and slogans repeated with pinpoint punctuality at eight in the afternoon begin to become a memory.

From the memory the complicit glances from one end of the street to the other have not yet been erased. Nor do the contained greetings of those who yearned (and continue to yearn) hold his arms in their arms. With these images on the retina, the XXIII edition of PHotoESPAÑA has focused its shot precisely on the balconies.

After the massive citizen participation in his initiative # PHEdesdemibalcón, which registered in just over a month and a half more than 63,000 images published under this hastag, the story created by anonymous authors has materialized in several open-air exhibitions spread over 50 Spanish cities, Madrid being in charge of opening the first one, which can be visited at the entrance to the Retiro in Plaza de la Independencia. Almost simultaneously, Barcelona, Santander, Coruña, Salamanca, Seville, Córdoba or Pamplona will also become venues for the festival, and its neighbors will join the long list of authors participating in this event with photography and the visual arts.

In this very atypical edition of the festival, which will exceptionally last until October, it will be necessary to wait until mid-July to enjoy other physical proposals on the program, being those projected at the Lázaro Galdiano Museum and in the Círculo de Bellas Artes two of the most anticipated. With the imprint of Koldo Chamorro , the first one reviews the uses and customs of Spanish rural society in the 70s and 80s of the 20th century, while the second one is set out as a journey through Japanese photography from the 50s to the Present. Without leaving the Círculo de Bellas Artes, Miguel Trillo's gaze on the anonymous characters of the Movida Madrileña occupies another of his rooms.

In the absence of definitive dates, the exhibition that is expected to host the Canal Foundation is another of the program's main dishes. Under the title Magnum. The body observed , the space will host the work of several photographers from the prestigious agency with human anatomy as a common denominator. More than a hundred works by up to 14 artists focus their objectives on analyzing a wide variety of topics such as identity, intimacy and sexuality, including rituals, voyeurism and performance. The proposal of CentroCentro, whose title, Between art and fashion , anticipates an exquisite selection of photographs from the Carla Sozzani collection, also seems essential . Over more than 40 years, he has compiled the works of authors such as Man Ray, Helmut Newton, Moholy-Nagy, Francesca Woodman, Daido Moriyama or Alfred Stieglitz.

Chema Madoz's visual poems or Ramón Masats' black and white look at Spain in the 50s and 60s contrast with the cold Manhattan skyscrapers that Danny Lyon froze with his lens, while Alberto Schommer , known for his profound psychology of his portraits, he brings the viewer back to Spain with his snapshots of the social and political protagonists of the 20th century: from painters and poets to playwrights and writers.

True to the essence of the contest, for yet another year, PHotoESPAÑA also wants to recognize the work of art galleries as promoters of the photographic market. For this reason, he wanted to bring together in his well-known OFF Festival not only the galleries in Madrid, but any other in the entire national territory that would like to join the project, proposing for the first time a digital development of the same. To this end, the festival's website has become a dissemination platform and meeting point for Spanish galleries, concentrating proposals from up to 60 of them.
