  • The Occitanie region had a benchmark indicator for coronavirus which recently placed it behind Guyana and Martinique, still very affected by the epidemic.
  • The virus is still circulating in the region, but two large clusters in the Gard and Haute-Garonne "distort" the figures.

TFC players tested positive, cases detected sporadically in schools in the Toulouse area or an XL cluster in Blagnac after a family meal.

The coronavirus is far from having disappeared from the Toulouse conurbation and more generally from Occitania. Spared by the epidemic, the region even found itself in red last week in the last epidemiological bulletin on the evolution of Covid-19 published by Santé Publique France.

It was indeed on the podium of French regions or territories where the R indicator, which measures the number of people infected by a patient, was 1.51, just behind Guyana (2.59) and Martinique (1, 57).

“When we got out of containment in our region, the virus's reproduction rate, that is to say the number of people infected with an initial case, had increased to 0.7. Due to the clusters that we have in the region, it is 1.51, which is what makes us pass through the red zone and be the highest rate in mainland France. This shows once again that we must be careful, the virus is still circulating, ”insists Muriel Alvarez, head of the Inflammation Infection Immunology Locomotor pole of the Toulouse University Hospital.

Cluster effect in Gard and Haute-Garonne

But less than these figures might suggest, the clusters having a direct impact on rates. This is what the regional epidemiological point published this Thursday evening notes. “Viral circulation remains at a low level throughout the region. Vigilance remains around the currently active clusters because of their size and the potential mobility of the populations they affect, "said the bulletin, referring to agricultural workers in the Gard and the community of Travelers affected in the Toulouse conurbation.

Last week, 1.5 people per 100,000 inhabitants tested positive in the region, reaching 3.8 for Gard and 2.7 for Haute-Garonne, with a Covid test positivity rate of 1.3 respectively. % and 1.4% when it is only 0.6% for the whole region. Figures to put into perspective, between June 15 and 21, 34 people tested positive in the Gard and 42 in Haute-Garonne. In this department, very few people are hospitalized and none in intensive care at the Toulouse University Hospital.

Among the 16 clusters reported between May 15 and June 24 in Occitania, 12 are now closed, three are under investigation and one is under control indicates Santé publique France. People are now more tested and isolated. "The deconfinement also made it easier for the patient to access care, and it is not impossible that it was an element," continues Muriel Alvarez.

The study of coronavirus strains may also give indicators of its virulence. "If we refer to the seasonal flu, depending on the virus influenza may be different from year to year, sometimes it is not quite the same clinical form," concludes this specialist Infectious diseases. Before adding: "What is certain is that the ball is in our court".
