Has Matti Laine , head writer Kosta (The Paradise) , that the idea of a Nordic noir in Malaga was born of a reality virtually ignored by the Spaniards. In Fuengirola there is a colony of 25,000 Finns, with their shops, their churches and their own bread, who barely speak Spanish, but enjoy the sun and the beach. And if a crime occurs in this idyllic community, a retired Finnish police officer travels there to solve it and, with Fran Perea, ends up entering a much larger criminal network than any of them imagined? As it turns out, we already have a series.

Orange TV debuts today Kosta , a co-production of the Spanish The Mediapro Studio, the Finnish public network YLE and the local producer MRP. It arrives here after devastating in its country of origin, where 40% of the spectators at some time contacted this fiction, recorded on stages on the Costa del Sol and in the Finnish town of Oulu, in English, Finnish and Spanish. And how did Fran Perea end up starring in this project?

"As a child I saw Los Serrano , which was a huge success here," explains Laine, author of crime novels and the Border Town and Bullets series , who thought of the Spanish actor to play Andrés Villanueva, a Fuengirola policeman with strong Ties with Nordic residents that carries a great loss. "I didn't know what he was doing, so I asked if he was still acting and what he looked like. Is he fat Because we need a former special forces agent, "he adds.

"I knew Fran Perea by name, so I said very well, he is a star, but I want to give him a test," says Marja Pyykkö , director of Kosta and other policemen such as Hooked and Black Widows . "He came very well prepared and was the best of all, so there was no problem," concludes the actor, who returned to work in Finland years after playing in large concerts for the followers of Los Serrano .

"The fans were very similar to the Spanish, but blondes," jokes the man from Malaga, delighted to work on his land and, moreover, to be able to show it to the world. About the series, he says: «He talks about smuggling, urban speculation, crime that is hidden by different interests and is very difficult to control, but, above all, he talks about some people in a difficult moment who face the best they can to their lives".

Perea believes that Kosta's international co-production model (The Paradise) is the future of television. “The world is moving towards the construction of borders, but luckily, in our sector they are falling apart. I myself am little of borders: I was born in Malaga, I grew up in Madrid and I have traveled a lot, and I think that has always brought me things, "he assured.

So much so that almost every day they finished filming taking something at the home of actress María Romero . «A common language is created, everything flows and those prejudices that you had are diluted. Because everyone has humor, they want to have fun and do a good job, ”says the actress, who nonetheless acknowledges with laughter some cultural differences. «They work from the calm, there is no race, precision and super pleasant efficiency. Maybe we are more energetic and that can get out of control ».

Pyykkö, the director, agrees with him: «In Finland I never have to be angry, but in Spain my camera mate sometimes told me: 'Marja, you have to go and scream'. And then they did what I said. But everything went well and a lot of fun too.

In short, Kosta is a Nordic noir sui generis that manages to navigate between Spain and Finland, while also preserving all its peculiarities. «In this series what is special is the code that is created through the union of these two cultures, which seem so contrary and find a common point. The result is a rather peculiar project because you are watching a sequence in Finnish, then in English, then in Spanish, but the brain assimilates it, "said Romero.

And Pyykkö concludes: "Of course, the light is different, but also the rhythm and the visual style, which adapts to the story creating a unique project."
