The cove of Zanflamme, at Larmor Plage, is lined with green algae in this spring 2020. - 20 Minutes

In early June, the mayor of Larmor-Plage gave himself a publicity stunt which he would have done well. It was in his commune, located opposite Lorient (Morbihan), that a man was rescued by the firefighters while he was wading in a carpet of green algae. “When I saw the images, I was afraid that the man would die. I was sick of it, ”said Thierry Burlot. The vice-president of the region in charge of the file had taken care to call the mayor to remind him of his obligation to pick up the ulvae, whose putrefaction generates hydrogen sulfide. A gas that has already cost the life of a horse, wild boars and a few men in Brittany.

In the wake of the publication of our article evoking the massive stranding in certain sectors of Morbihan, the association Water and Rivers of Brittany had alerted the press to the phenomenon. When questioned, the prefecture had explained that the sudden rise in temperatures, associated with less dispersion of algae this winter, had contributed to these larger and earlier groundings in the Morbihan. In northern Brittany, usually the most affected sector, strandings are very low this year.

24 to 48 hours delay

On June 19, the prefect of Morbihan Patrice Faure therefore sent a letter to the mayors of the department concerned by these strandings, asking them to pick up the too famous green algae. From Larmor-Plage to the ria of Etel via the charming Île aux Moines of the Gulf of Morbihan, the ulvae collect on mud flats, which prevents collection vehicles from venturing there.

According to the Water and Rivers of Brittany association, the prefect would have asked the mayors to "regularly collect the algae" within "24 to 48 hours for massive deposits". Patrice Faure also wishes that access to sites that could not be treated (such as mudflats) be prohibited and that information panels be installed. The association takes advantage of this to scratch the representative of the State, referring to "the numerous exemptions from spreading" and "the authorizations for the creation or extension of farm factories" granted by the prefect.
