The position of the politician comes at a time when a downward review of the speed limit on different types of roads is envisaged at the national or local level to reduce pollution and fight against global warming.
Decision subject to referendum?
The 20 km / h reduction in the speed limit not to be exceeded on the motorway is also part of the proposals put forward by the 150 authors of the Citizen's Climate Convention. Emmanuel Macron plans to receive them on June 29. The President of the Republic had previously indicated that he envisaged submitting to a national referendum some of the measures devised by the members of the convention.
"These speed restrictions relate to ecology, road safety, the relationships that the French have […] with their freedoms, these are fine subjects of democracy", commented Jean-Baptiste Djebbari, Secretary of State for Transport, invited to speak on the subject this Monday.
