Sales of bikes have exploded since the end of containment. Between May 12 and June 12, they were up 117% compared to 2019, in the same period, according to figures from Union Sport and Cycle reported by BFMTV. The deconfinement acted as a stimulant because on the first week, they took off by 134%.

Spring is a good time to buy a bike, but the health crisis has accentuated this phenomenon. The government's bicycle plan, which provides purchase aids for electric bikes, has also given the market a boost.

The industry is struggling to supply

Insurers are also taking advantage of this situation. Requests for contracts to insure two-wheelers have increased. In May, the Cyclassur site was able to count on 73% of additional subscriptions in Ile-de-France. The bicycle industry is doing well, but is struggling to supply demand, as a report from Les Echos in the Nantes region shows.

The Manufacture Française du Cycle (MFC), the largest factory in France located in Machecoul, in Loire-Atlantique, is operating at full capacity to support "shipments, three to four times higher than normal" indicates its general manager. But production will be limited by the availability of spare parts from Asia, worries the official, who notes that the craze for cycling is global.
