A referendum to fix the speed limit on the highway? Why not, estimated this Monday on RTL the Secretary of State for Transport Jean-Baptiste Djebbari, reacting to one of the proposals of the Citizen Convention for the climate.

“These speed restrictions relate to ecology, road safety, the relationships that the French have (…) with their freedoms, these are fine subjects of democracy. This proposal could find out if the President (of the Republic) so decides to fit into a series of proposals (…) submitted to a consultative referendum, ”declared Jean-Baptiste Djebbari.

A question that divides the French

The head of state, who will receive the 150 citizens of the Convention on June 29, had decided to organize this exercise in participatory democracy unprecedented in France after the crisis of "yellow vests", triggered by the announcement of a tax carbon on fuels. President Emmanuel Macron indicated that he envisaged a referendum with multiple questions on some of the proposals made by the Convention, a hypothesis relayed by several members of the majority or of the government.

Among these proposals, the reduction of speed on the highway from 130 to 110 km / h polarized opinion and sparked the ire of motorist associations, echoing the discontent already triggered by the 80 km / h on national.

Asked about his personal position on 110 km / h, the Secretary of State for Transport did not take a position. "I am a citizen, so if I am consulted, I will express myself," he simply replied. "It is a beautiful political subject (…), that is why I think it is one of the subjects that possibly could find a place in a referendum," insisted Jean-Baptiste Djebbari.
