On the morning of the 22nd, there was a fire at a facility inside the U.S. Army Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, and it was put out after about 6 hours. No one was injured due to this fire, but the toxic chlorine gas was leaked, and the Okinawa Defense Bureau has confirmed.

According to the 18th Wing of the United States Air Force operating the Kadena Air Base and the Okinawa Defense Bureau, a fire broke out from a facility handling dangerous goods on the base 9:00 am on the 22nd.

The fire was extinguished approximately 6 hours later, before 3:00 pm, as US fire fighters fired.

It means that the people who were in the facility and the surrounding area were evacuated, and no one was injured so far.

On the other hand, Facebook of the 18th Air Wing claims that chlorine gas has leaked out from the fire and calls for medical attention if you feel pain in your eyes, nose, or throat toward the base.

According to Kadena Town and Okinawa City near the base, there is no contact from the residents to make them feel unwell at 5 pm.

The Mayor Toyama of Kadena Town told NHK the telephone interview that the US military contacted the town that there was no effect of chlorine gas on local residents. I am most concerned about the impact on local residents because it is poisonous. I do not know the basis of what the US military says, so I'd like to wait for information from the Okinawa Defense Bureau."

The Okinawa Defense Bureau has confirmed with the U.S. Army about the status of the spilled gas and the cause of the fire.
