A generic drug used to combat osteoporosis, Raloxifene , "could serve as an effective treatment for Covid-19 positive patients with mild or asymptomatic symptoms," according to European researchers, the European Commission (EC) reported in a statement.

The "promising results" of the research by the European consortium Exscalate4CoV are based on calculations by the European Union (EU) supercomputing system .

In particular, the researchers have focused their analyzes on verifying the "potential impact of the already known molecules against the genomic structure of the coronavirus".

The Exscalate4CoV consortium has 18 partners and 15 associate members, including the National Center for Supercomputing , located in Barcelona , as well as the counterpart institutions in Germany and Italy .

"The consortium has already tested virtually 400,000 molecules using its supercomputers. 7,000 were preselected and 40 were active against in vitro experiments. Among them, Raloxifene emerged as the most promising molecule," reported the community executive.

In this first phase of the investigation it has been possible to verify that the drug "could be effective in blocking the replication of the virus in the cells", thus stopping the progression of the disease, especially when it is in an early phase. The researchers highlight the "high tolerability for the patient, the safety and the highly established toxicological profile" of the compound.

Before continuing with the experimental process, the project must receive the approval of the European Medicines Agency , which must approve the new "potential use" of the compound. "Once approved, the drug could quickly be made available to the public in large quantities and at low cost, thereby helping to mitigate the effects of new waves of infection," he stressed.

On the occasion of this investigation, the Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton , stressed that these first results "demonstrate the value of true pan-European cooperation" in scientific matters. Therefore, he did not rule out the mobilization of more resources and available technologies, "including Artificial Intelligence", to fight the virus.
