A search in the Grésilles district of Dijon, June 18, 2020. - JC Tardivon / SIPA

A vast search operation mobilizing 140 CRS was underway this Friday morning in the sensitive districts of Grésilles, in Dijon, and Mail in Chenôve, after violence that occurred from June 12 to 15 in the agglomeration, said the prefect.

"The police operations are aimed at searching for weapons, ammunition and narcotics," said Bernard Schmeltz, regional prefect. Upon requisition of the prosecution, they mobilize two CRS companies, or about 140 officials, he added, adding that the aim was not to arrest but to carry out searches.

Assault rifles and automatic pistols

Public prosecutor Eric Mathais said Wednesday that investigations were continuing "to identify the participants" in the violence that shook Grésilles but also Chenôve, in the southwest suburbs of Dijon, Monday evening.

In videos posted on social networks, hooded men appeared equipped with what appeared to be assault rifles or automatic pistols. They also attacked security cameras and set vehicles on fire. This violence erupted after a series of reprisals launched by members of the Chechen community wishing to take revenge on the aggression of a teenager by, according to them, inhabitants of Grésilles. Calm has returned since Tuesday and the Chechen father of the attacked teenager has called for an end to these abuses.

Six Chechens were arrested Thursday as part of the investigation into these facts that have marked the spirits in a Burgundian capital unaccustomed to this type of tension.
