Anne-So Echos de Mots, youth literary blogger and contributor to the reading group "20 Minutes Books", recommends Toffee et Moi by Sarah Crossan, published on June 17, 2020 by Éditions Rageot.

His favorite quote:

"Even a simple thing, you manage to miss it," he said.
I'm doing my best, I said.
He raised his hand when I answered, and then he changed his mind.
You don't help me love you, you know, Allie.
There were times when he felt sorry. "

Why this book?

  • Because Sarah Crossan is decidedly the queen of romances in free verse, overwhelming with emotion, delicately translated by the talented Clémentine Beauvais (author of Songe à la Douceur ).
  • Because Toffee and Me is the story of a wonderful encounter between two broken heroines. The first is Allison; a teenage girl on the run, fleeing from a toxic and terribly violent father. The second is an old woman with dementia living alone. Two generations that collide and two solitudes that support each other.
  • Because the relationship between Allison and Marla is tinged with a sweetness sublimated by the writing of Sarah Crossan. It's beautiful, tender and somewhere, as simple as evidence.
  • Because this sweetness is contrasted by the violence it harbors. The two heroines are fighters, each in their own way; cashing without giving back while having the strength to come out of their trials.
  • Because Toffee et Moi is a magnificent work. If it were music, it would be one of those classic and timeless works that inhabit the heart and that live fully rather than just being listened to. Between the so recognizable pen of Sarah Crossan and its devastating themes, this novel is one of those that leave an imprint on the lives of its readers.
