  • Health: They warn that using hydroalcoholic gel on the beach can cause burns

The latest figures published by the Ministry of Health on confirmed cases of coronavirus in Spain point to a sustained increase in infections, which have practically doubled since Sunday. Thus, of the 40 cases confirmed three days ago, it went to 76 on Monday and those diagnosed yesterday are already 141.

Of these, most have occurred in Madrid (65), Castilla y León (24) and Cataluña (23).

However, the global number of diagnoses continues to decline, given that 1,578 new cases have been diagnosed in the last week, compared to 1,665 accumulated yesterday. Of them, 154 have presented symptoms in the last seven days, compared to 171 yesterday and 218 the day before.

Regarding hospitalizations, 97 have occurred in the last week (11 more than those announced yesterday) and 10 have been admitted to the ICU (6 the previous day).

Likewise, although the official number of total deaths has stagnated at 27,136 since June 7 , according to data provided by the Ministry, there have been 30 deaths in the last seven days.

There are no changes in Spain's position as the third European country with the most cases (244,683 total), behind Russia (553,301) and the United Kingdom (298,136).

As Fernando Simón , director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, pointed out , "the trend is globally downward and has not been affected by the increase in the search for cases."

He also assured that the Spanish authorities are "pending the outbreak detected in a market in Beijing, where around 100,000 PCR are being carried out in two days to prevent its spread."

In Spain, "where there is hardly any community transmission", Simón explained that "we are attentive to small outbreaks identified and that we are trying to control" . Specifically, he specified, "one in a health center in the Basque Country and the other in slaughterhouses in Catalonia."

Regarding the latter case, Simón has stated that "on many occasions, workers in these industries tend to be from disadvantaged social groups who live both on and off the job, and we have to study whether this is the case and whether they are using correctly the personal protective equipment ".

Regarding the situation of Spanish hospitals , Simón has announced that "the expansion of ICU beds has been progressively reduced and we have almost reached the normal figure, but they can be deployed again very quickly."

Regarding the acquisition of vaccines, the director of CCAES explained that "Spain has open different lines of research and a consortium with other countries that place us at the forefront to quickly obtain possible vaccines and treatments."

Finally, asked about the use of dexamethasone to alleviate the symptoms of the most severe patients, backed by a study from the University of Oxford, Simón said that "it was already being used and, probably, its use has now increased" . However, until the conclusions of the study by the Ministry and the scientific societies are known and analyzed in detail, their use will not be documented in Spain.
