"Town as a problem maker" fell into the trap of indulging in learning

Recently, the new word "small town is a problem maker" has resonated with the youth group. The etymology comes from a group of more than 50,000 members in Douban.com. The group said in the introduction that the main function of the group is to "share failure stories" for the "failure students" of the "985" and "211" universities, so as to achieve the purpose of "self-help".

The so-called "failed students" are vividly referred to as "small towns do the problem", referring to the disciples who came from villages and towns. They depended on the "question sea tactics" in the middle school stage, and were forced to obtain excellent academic results by the pressure of the teachers and the discipline, thus leaving the town and entering the first-class famous school. But after entering the university, some people lamented that they missed the dividend of the times, some people were desolate in their studies, and lamented their confused future. Unable to break free from the shackles of small towns and to enter the city walls has become the main reason for their unbalanced mentality.

In a self-media article entitled "Towner Doing the Problem: A Destiny Trap for a 211 College Student", the protagonist Zhao Wei is just such a typical town youth. He entered the "examination factory" type high school. From learning slag to learning hegemony, he turned himself into a "question-making machine", and finally "carp jumped the dragon gate" into the "211" college. After that, he regarded the original sin of poverty as an adult, and completely blamed the marginal sense of incompatibility on the original family. He even fell into depression and broke off his parents.

Although the article expressed a subjective color, it also caused a strong sense of substitution for many young people from small towns. People express this feeling: "You are born in a small city, immersed in hard work, good at exams, and lack of vision and resources for young students. Isn't that what I said?"

The ending of the story's protagonist, Zhao Wei, does not look very good. The highlight moment of "a small town is a problem solver" really only stays at the moment when the college entrance examination is released. Is life afterwards one after another?

It is undeniable that there are real differences in education between urban and rural areas and between different regions. However, compared with the post-60s and post-70s parents, the post-90s rural students’ access to education and further education has greatly improved. The enrollment rate of small-risk, high-risk, and high-school admissions to colleges has all increased significantly. Simply from the perspective of mastering book knowledge, relying on live broadcast online courses and other methods, the gap between urban and rural education is gradually narrowing, and the education gap is being filled a little bit.

At the present stage, the reason why some youth groups collectively fall into an illusion seems that education is no longer the way out. Birth determinism and reading useless theory have changed their heads and made a comeback, making them feel powerless and lost in life. The more important reason is the family. The difference in education is the difference between the so-called vision and social resources.

Compared with the parents who live in a small town and make a living, the parents of urban families do have more financial resources and energy to cultivate their children's interests.

According to the 2013-2014 baseline data of the China Education Tracking Survey (CEPS) hosted by Renmin University of China, 18.05% of urban households reported music interest classes for children and only 6.14% in rural areas. 65.55% of rural students have not participated in any interest classes or extracurricular tutoring classes, while the proportion of non-agricultural students who have not participated is only 34.64%.

Data from the China Education Tracking Survey (CEPS) also shows that as an important indicator of cultural capital measurement, “visiting museums, zoos, and science and technology museums with parents”, 54.42% of agricultural households have never done it, rather than those in the household registration. This ratio is only 26.39%.

After entering the university after the college entrance examination, this part of the short board of education has become a certain shortage for rural students who were born in small towns.

However, can you only change your life by blaming the world, blaming society, and blaming all the setbacks in life for your origin?

I still remember when I was in college, the girl in the same bedroom was born in the poorest rural area in Jiangxi. When the school was enrolled, the luggage of the urban children occupied most of the space in the bedroom. She only had a small bag of clothes. When the kid in the city was holding a laptop and chatting with netizens, she hadn’t even touched a desktop computer... It was around 2000, but this did not prevent her from quickly integrating with her own efforts. For collective life, through hard work and study, it is the first to pass the computer level two.

In fact, the confusion of "a small town is a problem maker" reflects the meaning of quality education precisely from the side. They did not follow the life set by their parents, changed their trajectory through the college entrance examination, had the right to choose, and had the opportunity to experience a different life. However, a victory in college entrance examination scores is not enough to pave the way for life. This is like the wealth accumulated by the fathers through their painstaking efforts. For the children and grandchildren, it may be a disaster or a blessing.

Life is destined to undergo tempering and precipitation. For young people in small towns, instead of indulging in the aura of learning in the past, it is better to seize the opportunity, learn to face a more real and complex life, and use a more comprehensive educational environment to achieve a leap in life.
