The Italian Health Minister, Roberto Speranza, announced this Saturday that his country, together with Germany, the Netherlands and France, has signed a contract with the AstraZeneca company for the supply of up to 400 million doses of vaccines for the entire population European.

This is the vaccine that is being developed at the University of Oxford and which has had the participation, for its large-scale production, of the pharmaceutical group AstraZeneca and the Italian IRBM and which is in a "state of advanced experimentation and that It will end in autumn with the distribution of the first doses at the end of the year, "as explained by the minister.

"Today's signing brings a promising first step forward for Italy and Europe. Vaccine is the only definitive solution at Covid 19. For me, it will always be considered a global public good, the right of all, not the privilege of a few ", has added.

This vaccine, which the University of Oxford is working on, will be tested on 5,000 healthy volunteers in the UK, already selected, and on many others in Brazil. Although the test will be doubled in Brazil since the current low circulation of the virus in Europe makes it more complex for scientists to analyze its effectiveness. The results of this phase 3 on the efficacy of the vaccine are expected in late September. Before, in a few weeks, the results of the first phase are expected.

The United Kingdom was the first country to reach an agreement to purchase 30 million doses. Astrazeneca had announced that it was working on parallel agreements, also with other European governments, to guarantee "a broad and equitable supply of the vaccine in the world, with a non-profit model, during the pandemic."

The countries of the European Union (EU) had been in favor of the European Commission (EC) designing a system for the early and centralized acquisition of vaccines against Covid-19 and that, once available, they were distributed simultaneously according to the Member States.

To date, the coronavirus has killed more than 425,000 people worldwide , according to data from the American Johns Hopkins University, while the total contagion already amounts to 7,630,000. The most affected country in the world continues to be the United States, with around 115,000 deaths and more than two million cases, while in Italy there are more than 34,000 deaths.
