Beijing News (Reporter Zhang Yu) Many cities in Guangxi are still suffering from heavy rain and floods, and some agricultural work is also deeply affected. Recently, a video on the Internet "A large number of fish in net cages in Wuzhou, Guangxi died due to unknown reasons" has attracted attention. Several villagers engaged in freshwater fish farming in the Xunjiang River section of Cangwu County, Wuzhou City told reporters that since June 6th, there have indeed been many fish farmers in the area who have encountered fish mass deaths. Although the death of cage cultured fish will occur during the flood season every year, this time the area is larger and there are different species and different deaths. The Agricultural and Rural Bureau of Cangwu County issued an emergency notice, saying that “some unidentified poisoning of large numbers of fish died in some cages”. The cause is still under investigation.

Tens of thousands of pounds of freshwater fish died

"There was a flood on the 6th. On the next day, the fish in the cages died in pieces, much larger than in previous years." Mr. Liao, who lives in Lingjiao Town, Cangwu County, Guangxi Province, told reporters. According to him, the recent heavy rains in the local area have caused the river's water level to rise. The arrival of the flood season has caused a large number of deaths of freshwater fish that he has farmed in the river. He was not alone in a similar encounter.

The reporter learned that cage culture is an important aquaculture industry in Cangwu County. Unlike common fish pond culture, the location of cage culture is in rivers and rivers. Cage farming is to build an iron fence in the river and surround it with fishing nets, in turn to form a "cage" underwater aquaculture environment, the average area of a cage is 36 square meters.

Mr. Liao has been engaged in cage culture in 2017. The breeding site is located in the Xunjiang River section of Lingjiao Town, which is also the main breeding place for freshwater fish farmers in counties and towns. According to him, in June and July every year, the Xunjiang waters ushered in the flood season, and the floods from the upper reaches washed down, and some fish will die during this period, "but the amount is generally small, and the death is not like this year. "

According to Mr. Liao, his farming scale is about 400,000 catties, and the death toll of freshwater fish has been nearly 30,000 catties. At present, all of them have been dug and buried on the land for harmless treatment.

Another farmer from the Renhe Town of Cangwu County, who was also on the Xunjiang River, told reporters that nearly 80% of the more than 20 boxes of freshwater fish he had raised had died. The rough loss was estimated at 400,000. Processed, the dead fish are still in the cage.

 The reason is not clear

Many farmers said to reporters that the deaths of farmed fish caused by floods occur every year, but the number of deaths is very small, and there is no difference in species.

Ms. Liang, who is also engaged in aquaculture work in the Xunjiang water section of Lingjiao Town, told reporters that after the rain and floods on the morning of June 7, the freshwater fish cultured in her cage appeared with protruding eyes and black body. The activities in the cages were violent, and they died soon after.

Among the dead fish, in addition to the grass carp, the freshwater fish species such as seabass, tilapia, forktail, etc. that she breeds all have a large area of death. The two farmers mentioned above also said that grass carp was least affected by the flood, and there were almost no large-scale deaths.

The reporter learned that last year, a large area of freshwater fish died. According to a report by the Xijiang Metropolis Daily in May 2019, in response to the video of mass deaths of net cage fish in Wuzhou at that time, the Wuzhou Agricultural and Rural Bureau issued a notice that its location was "in the Cangwu and Changzhou Xunjiang sections, with the focus on In Table Water Village and Longtan Village of Cangwu County, the area of the affected breeding cages is about 100,000 square meters, involving more than 140 farmers", and the cause is diagnosed as "small melon disease", which is the most serious disease among fish. The infection rate is very high during seeding.

It is understood that in response to this year's local "large number of net fish deaths" incident, the Cangwu County Agricultural and Rural Bureau issued an emergency notice to farmers that "some unidentified poisoning of large numbers of fish in some net cages in the Xunjiang River section has resulted in deaths." , The reason is still under investigation.
