The judge from Draguignan in the Var is investigating a traffic in spoil of construction sites orchestrated for several years on the Côte d'Azur by building and public works companies. He indicted eleven people arrested on Tuesday and four companies, said the prosecution on Friday.

All the protagonists of the case, exposed by complaints from individuals threatened after having received rubble instead of topsoil, were indicted "mainly for acts of irregular management of waste in an organized band, abandonment of waste in an organized gang, hidden work, repeated death threats and money laundering, "according to the prosecution.

Four companies prosecuted

Four people were imprisoned and seven others placed under judicial supervision with "a strong bond of more than 100,000 euros" for two of them, said the prosecutor Patrice Camberou in a statement.

Hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of earth, concrete, scrap metal, tar were dumped on some twenty irretrievably disfigured sites, mainly in the Var, but also in the Alpes-Maritimes, according to the prosecution. And among these sites, there are agricultural or wine properties.

Four companies are the subject of proceedings, said the prosecution, three days after a major operation of the gendarmerie to search the headquarters of six companies, based mainly around Fréjus (Var) and one in Cagnes-sur-Mer ( Alpes-Maritimes) according to a source familiar with the matter.
