The numerous demonstrations organized on Saturday against police violence should bring together several thousand people in sometimes tight processions. Europe 1 asked epidemiologist Anne-Claude Crémieux the question of a possible risk of cluster formation during these mobilizations.

Marseille, Paris, Lyon, Montpellier… Demonstrations are organized in several cities in France, Saturday, at the call of the Truth committee for Adama, eleven days after the mobilization of 20,000 people in Paris initiated by the family of Adama Traoré. These gatherings, prohibited for some, raise questions at a time when the state of health emergency still prohibits on paper from meeting more than ten people in public space. Are these, however, potential "clusters" of coronavirus?

"We know that being in a closed environment greatly increases the risk. Being in an open environment will obviously be much less risky," explains epidemiologist Anne-Claude Crémieux, interviewed on Friday by Europe 1. "Open environments, as well as social distance and masks, make it possible to considerably reduce the risk of transmission of the virus from one person to another. "

"Trust" the protesters

However, part of the people who demonstrated ten days ago did not wear a mask and this could happen again on Saturday. "We also have the example of demonstrations in other countries and for the moment, we have no elements to think that there have been clusters", estimates the infectiologist at the Saint- Louis, in Paris.

"Of course, you have to be careful and people have to keep the barrier gestures as much as possible. The combination of distance and masks still protects very well", continues Anne-Claude Crémieux. Reassuring, the epidemiologist invites to "trust the responsibility of the demonstrators", because "people are still fairly vigilant" about the threat posed by the virus.
