A man in the US state of California is facing charges of poisoning eight homeless people with a substance described as "twice more" than pepper spray, according to BBC news.

William Robert Cable, 38, was charged with providing food contaminated with olive oil extracts to at least eight people, and photographing them while they were sick.

A number of the alleged victims were taken to hospital, while the authorities believe that the accused targeted others.

If convicted, Cable could face a 19-year prison sentence.

Those people were targeted because they were “weak,” said Todd Spitzer, Attorney for Orange County. “They were exploited and poisoned as part of an oblique form of entertainment, and their pain was recorded so that the aggressor could live with it over and over.”

After consuming the substance, the victims experienced symptoms including epileptic seizures, difficulty breathing, and vomiting, according to the prosecutor's office.

Cable was detained last month before being released on a $ 500,000 bail. He faces 8 charges of poisoning, and also charges that a minor was involved with him in the attacks.
