Five initial indictments were pronounced in the traffic of excavated site on the French Riviera which are suspected several construction companies in the region, said Thursday the prosecutor's office of Draguignan.

"Hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of earth, concrete, scrap metal, tar were dumped on some twenty irretrievably disfigured sites", mainly in the Var, but also in the Alpes-Maritimes, two tourist departments, according to the parquet.

"Five indictments" were pronounced, one person was placed in detention and six others see being referred Thursday, said the prosecutor Patrice Camberou. The investigation led to the search of the headquarters of six companies in Fréjus (Var) and Cagnes-sur-Mer (Alpes-Maritimes) and the seizure of around 100 trucks. It began with complaints from individuals who were victims of this mafia that had been raging for several years.

“They approached individuals looking for topsoil for their land, and instead put 200 trucks of rotten stuff on them. If the disgruntled owners dared to protest, they were visited with big arms and were encouraged to wait, ”said a source familiar with the matter. Nearly 200 gendarmes were mobilized Tuesday during the operation called "Burned lands", supported by agents of the tax authorities and the regional directorate for the environment (Dreal).
