Business resumes for Airbnb after an activity stalled for several months because of the sanitary measures put in place to fight against the Covid-19: users had lost interest in the participative platform for housing rentals. The company, like other players in the tourism or services sector, was struggling. Recently, reservations are back again, reports Bloomberg .

In the United States alone, Airbnb recorded more rentals between May 17 and June 3, 2020 than in the same period of the previous year. The same revival of activity has been observed in Germany, Portugal, South Korea and even in New Zealand. This trend is explained by a spike in requests from customers looking for accommodation within their borders.

Longer, closer trips

"After being trapped at home for several months, people want to get out of their housing, it could not be clearer, analyzes Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky. But they do not necessarily want to fly and are not comfortable with the idea of leaving their country. These reservations for closer accommodation are made more at the last minute and stays are longer than for trips to a distant country.

On average, searches for rentals via Airbnb in all the countries where the platform is available are however down 10% compared to last year. The company expects annual sales to drop by 50% and is laying off a quarter of its employees worldwide. At the same time, large hotel chains deplore a 60% drop in turnover.
