“With the coronavirus crisis a new category of plastic waste has emerged”

The communication operation was closely followed by volunteers from the environmental association, including Antidia Citores, spokesperson for Surfrider Europe. Committed for more than thirty years in the fight for the protection of the oceans, the association organizes each year more than 1,500 cleaning campaigns with its volunteers along the Atlantic coast, as indicated on its website. This Sunday, Surfrider took the opportunity to remind, according to our colleague from South West , that "80% of the waste collected in the ocean comes from the land".

“The waste that is left on the sidewalks, whether in Carpentras or in Bordeaux, ends up in the seas and the oceans carried by the wind and the rivers. It is imperative that we fight against this plastic pollution and against such incivility, especially since with the coronavirus crisis a new category of plastic waste has emerged: masks, gloves, disposable wipes, ”said Brune Poirson.

And the entourage of the minister to indicate to 20 Minutes  : "People are used to seeing cigarette butts being thrown on the ground, but in the light of the Covid-19 crisis and the appearance of new waste , getting used to it is no longer possible. The fight against pollution must be stepped up by taking more radical measures. It is for this reason that the government has decided to toughen the sanctions. ” The fines for abandoning waste on the public highway will thus increase from 68 euros to 135 euros. It can go up to 375 euros in the most serious cases. The decree is expected to come into force in early summer.
