  • Today, "Les Enfants des Feuillantines" by Célia Garino, published on May 27, 2020 by Éditions Sarbacane.

Anne So Echos de Mots, youth literary blogger and contributor to the reading group "20 Minutes Books", recommends Les Enfants des Feuillantines  by Célia Garino, published on May 27, 2020 by Éditions Sarbacane.

His favorite quote:

"Maybe we don't have a lot of money, that I kill myself with the task, that I raise them badly, that they live with a pig, a parrot and a rabbit, a great-grandmother who takes more of the furniture than the human being - sorry granny -, but they are happy here. No other home would make them so happy. We are siblings. "

Why this book?

  • Because by delving into this sparkling novel, the reader meets Désirée, a young 25-year-old woman who has custody of seven children in her family, a 106-year-old grandmother, a dwarf pig not so dwarf, a runaway rabbit and a rude parrot. All these beautiful people live in the large family home in Normandy: Les Feuillantines. They are the descendants of three beautiful passionate triplets, in love with love or freedom and above all, terribly absent. One killed herself, the second made the trunk and the third had to be interned.
  • Because to call Les Enfants des Feuillantines a family comedy would be correct but terribly incomplete; it is also a family chronicle overflowing with emotions and often crazy. As you read, you fall in love with these characters with a heavy past but filled with ardor, pugnacity and humor. Their unconventional way of life, their improbable first names or their different personalities so special make them characters as we too rarely come across.
  • Because behind the joyful mess and the funny situations, we discover real suffering in these young people, without ever falling into pathos or self-pity. Each member of the cousinade has their own demons and is determined to take matters into their own hands to defeat them. Their strength and determination are fascinating and offer depth to this novel which knows how to be sparkling, funny and explosive but also intelligent, relevant and touching.
  • Because Les Enfants des Feuillantines is a beautiful baby of 468 pages who parade at a crazy speed as the rhythm is wild and the writing energetic. Célia Garino, the author, reveals a feather of great accuracy adorned with delicious fantasies, to be discovered urgently! The light tone makes it a pleasant reading but does not in any way reduce the importance of certain complex themes such as dropping out, school harassment, lack of self-confidence or the difficulty, sometimes, of being loved by those who do us good.
  • Because Les Enfants des Feuillantines is a magnificent novel populated by colorful characters and brimming with love. I was charmed from the first to the last page and I know that I will always keep the Mortemer family in my heart. If you love yourself, even just a little, take a trip to Normandy with the Mortemers and prepare to be entertained, charmed and touched by this family which is like no other.

The essential in 2 minutes

The intrigue.  After the third of the exuberant triplets Mortemer was interned, Désirée, 25, officially becomes the guardian of seven of the children of her family. This atypical family learns to live in joyful chaos while learning a lot about themselves in the process.

Characters.  Désirée, 25, is the tutor of Hermeline, Brunehilde, Isidore, Honoré, Warren, Calliope and Pernelle. Just that.

Places.  The novel takes place near Caen, from the family home, Les Feuillantines, to the various children's schools.

The time.  We meet the Mortemers five years after the departure without goodbye from Wilhelmina, four years after the suicide of Isabella and two months after the internment of Rosemonde.

The author.  Célia Garino is a French author born in 1997 in Saumur. It is with a literary bac and a license of letters in pocket that she launches out in the profession of teacher. She signs, with Les Enfants des Feuillantines , her second novel.

This book was read with  pleasure by Anne-So Echos de Mots, blogger specializing in children's and teenage literature. “For me, reading can be as much a personal pleasure in which one runs to take refuge as an excuse to exchange and meet other readers. I am a lover of words always interested in new discoveries. "
