Nicole Garcia and the director Maïwenn at the anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival in May 2017 - JEAN MARC HAEDRICH / SIPA

We will have to withdraw the satisfecits: no, the Cannes Film Festival does not have more female directors in its selection (virtual, since the Festival will not take place) this year than last year, as the institution indicated in a communicated on June 2, and as 20 Minutes announced it in stride (Mea Culpa).

"The number of female directors appearing in the Selection shows a more significant increase: they will be 16 female directors to present a film against 14 in 2019," said this press release, the day before the selection was revealed. But when we count the number of female directors in the list communicated on June 3, as Allo Ciné did, we discover 13 female directors, not 16.

Disclaimer

The reason given by the Festival, contacted by 20 Minutes , is as follows: “Initially, the presentation text of the Selection which was broadcast on Tuesday June 2 reported on 16 selected directors. The Selection revealed on Wednesday June 3 has 13 directors. Three directors have chosen to postpone to 2021. Two made this decision on the evening of June 2, and one on the morning of June 3. In the meantime, therefore, and this is fairly common in the Cannes process, the list has evolved. "

There were 14 female directors in 2019, 11 in 2018, 12 in 2017, 9 in 2016 and 6 in 2015. The selection this year therefore includes more women than in 2018, but less than in 2019.
