The number of cases of children affected since March 1 by the inflammatory syndrome close to Kawasaki disease has been estimated at 179. This is probably linked to Covid-19, reports BFMTV. The figures were released this by Santé Publique France (SPF) in its latest epidemiological point.

In detail, half of these children tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This data makes it possible to establish a link between the disease and the epidemic in progress. For 21 children, or 12% of the cases, the link with the virus was considered "probable". It is “possible” for 19 others, or 10% of the cases, but the results of the analyzes are still awaited. However, for almost a third of the cases (28%), no link with the Covid-19 could be established, the report underlines.

Half of them in intensive care

Almost half of these children, or 83 cases, had to be placed in intensive care. Twenty-seven required admission to the critical care unit, says BFMTV. Half of the young patients were concentrated in the Ile-de-France region. Between 10 and 20 cases of inflammatory syndrome close to Kawasaki disease have been reported in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Grand-Est and PACA.

It is still difficult for specialists to establish a definite link between this pathology and the coronavirus, recalls the news chain. In mid-May, SPF announced that a nine-year-old child died in Marseille after having developed an inflammatory disease that reached his heart and which was probably linked to Covid-19. But the child never had symptoms of the coronavirus.
