  • The professionals are delighted with the Cannes selection.
  • They hope it will help boost attendance at movie theaters.
  • The films will be supported throughout their careers and may participate in other festivals.

Cinema professionals are smiling after the announcement of the selection for the Cannes Film Festival 2020. "Of course, we will not have the pleasure of climbing the steps but what matters is that the films are put forward," said at  20 Minutes  Manuel Chiche, president of The Jokers who distributed Parasite de Bong Joon-ho, Palme d'or 2019. I admire the fact that Thierry Frémaux and Pierre Lescure have never given up on bringing the event to life. "

This year, Manuel Chiche presents Teddy , a werewolf film co-directed by the brothers Ludovic and Zoran Boukherma ( Willy 1st ). "Even if there is no official projection, the Cannes label is a guarantee of quality for moviegoers especially since Teddy, who will be released in 2021, will have the opportunity to be awarded at various festivals", insists the distributor. Indeed, the works chosen by Cannes will have the possibility of competing for other events and thus increasing their notoriety in France and abroad.

Dubbed by Cannes

Lucas Belvaux, Belgian director of the film  Des hommes,  also selected, shares this point of view. "I am proud that my film was chosen," he confides to 20 Minutes . We had proposed it to Thierry Frémaux before confinement and I would not have seen myself waiting for the 2021 edition to present it to the public. "This adaptation of a novel by Laurent Mauvignier on the Algerian war with Gérard Depardieu will be released in theaters on November 11, 2020." Many films will be released this fall and I am convinced that this distinction will be an important asset for the distribution of mine. To be dubbed by Cannes is not nothing, ”insists Lucas Belvaux.

Richard Patry, president of the Federation of French Cinemas, is optimistic. "I am delighted to see that the selection includes comedies and genre films that will attract audiences to our theaters," he enthuses. Cannes is of capital importance, especially for French films. The famous "label" will not just be a label affixed to advertising material. It must be accompanied by real work on feature films "It will have the effect of a flashing light to signal films not to be missed," said Philippe Rouyer, president of the Syndicate of Critics. We are impatient to discover them.
