  • Blanche Gardin is one of the most popular French humorists of the moment.
  • Never filmed, one of his shows was hosted by the author of BD Fabcaro.
  • The result is broadcast Wednesday June 3 at 10:45 pm on Canal +, which devotes its evening to Blanche Gardin.

Who better than Fabcaro, author of comics with caustic humor, to animate a show of the no less incisive - and ultra-popular - humorist Blanche Gardin? And when we write animate, we speak literally since the Montpellier artist really "gave life" to Il faut que je parle , the very first one woman show of the former resident of the Jamel Comedy Club, produced in 2015 but never filmed.
How? 'Or' What ? By making a sort of very bare cartoon synchronized with the voice (recorded at the time) of the double recipient, in 2018 and 2019, of a Molière of humor. The result, confusing realism to the point that we forget, from the first minutes, that it is not really Blanche Gardin that we see on stage, little pride in being the "first animated stand-up" .

Fabcaro unveiled at 20 Minutes the genesis of this extraordinary project, broadcast this Wednesday evening at 8:45 pm on Canal +…

How did you end up on this project?

We had already met, with Blanche, during the theatrical adaptation of my comic strip Zaï zaï zaï zaï by the Argument troupe in which she played. And as she had an audio recording, but no video, of her very first show, it was she who had the idea to ask me to put it in pictures.

Have you tried this kind of exercise before?

No never.

So how did you do it?

Oh, I'm an "old idiot", me (laughs): I worked the old-fashioned way, I made a whole series of pen drawings on Blanche's paper under different planes and then I sent them to the studio animation that took care of doing all the work from my illustrations.

Was your work supervised by Blanche Gardin?

No, I had total freedom, knowing that the idea was to stick to the show and stay sober. And then sometimes make specific drawings when the humor was more gestural, more visual.

Your almost minimalist contribution contrasts with the impetuosity and crudity of Blanche Gardin's texts. Was it intentional?

Yes, right away with Blanche we wanted something sober. On the one hand because her staging is usually very sober and static, and then I wanted her great texts to be highlighted and therefore my images do not interfere too much with the texts, they just serve of support.

What was Blanche Gardin's reaction when she discovered the result?

Oh well it was packed, which obviously made me super happy!

How long did this work take?

I never know how to answer these kind of questions because I always carry out three thousand projects at the same time so it is difficult to estimate the actual working time… But let's say, all inclusive, a few months? (Yes sorry it's fuzzy ...)

And what did this experience bring you, in artistic terms?

It especially brought me in human terms, I was delighted to work with Blanche on this project. And then to see other things than the comics or the novel, I like the idea of making the tourist in different artistic fields.

In the end, are you proud of your work?

Oh yes, I'm happy with it, I really like the result.

Could you consider repeating this kind of experience?

No, I do not think so. I did it because I love Blanche and her writing, but the pure drawing doesn't excite me more than that. And animation is a fairly laborious thing. But I really loved doing it, watching the project come to life step by step.

What are your plans for the coming months?

In June comes out the second volume of my comic strip Open bar . In August my next novel, Broadway. And then I'm going to go back to other things, writing, comics, but I don't know what yet, I'm going to let myself be carried…
