The announcement would have been all the more welcome during the confinement, but better late than never. Since June 1, the first two seasons of The Incredible Kardashian Family are available on Netflix, a television saga which now has 18, the 19th is currently on hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
If it is impossible to know when (and if) the platform will broadcast all of this reality show, Netflix therefore offers us to dive back into the origins of the Kardashian Empire. Direction the first 19 episodes, filmed in 2007 and 2008, where we find Kim, then 27 years old, his mother and manager Kris, his brother and sisters, and their awful looks of the 2000s.
But how to explain the success of this reality show around a common American family? Remember that the show about the family of Ozzy Osbourne had not changed the face of the world ... Well precisely because the Kardashian dynasty has proven over the years that it is nothing trivial.
A lawyer and a sextape
It is not enough to be rich and live in California in an ultra-kitsch house to be adored (or hated) by millions of viewers and Internet users. Let us remember Paris Hilton which fell like a soufflé (so to speak). But then why the Kardashian family more than another? First of all because Robert Kardashian, the father of Kourtney (1979), Kim (1980), Khloé (1984), and Rob (1987), was already a well-known personality. Died in 2003 from cancer, he was none other than the lawyer (and friend) of OJ Simpson, former professional American football player and actor (without forgetting godfather of Kim K), accused of having murdered his ex-wife and her lover. A highly publicized trial with many twists and turns that led to the American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson in 2016, where Robert is played by David Schwimmer. The Kardashian family therefore already had a little reputation.
But it is obviously thanks to Kris and her children that the clan owes its fame, and in particular to Kim, who quickly established herself as the main character of reality TV. Almost unknown at the time - if not to be in the circle close to Paris Hilton -, the young woman knows a peak of celebrity after the disclosure of a sextape shot in private, by the film production company X Vivid. Then follows a lawsuit to recover the rights to the video, which Kim ends up selling for several million dollars. A few months later, the family signs a contract with E! to reveal his daily life in a program called The Incredible Kardashian Family (Keeping Up with the Kardashians).
The birth of a pop icon
However, it would be a shame to reduce Kim K to a sextape. In 13 years, the young woman has proven that she is a formidable businesswoman, but also a true pop icon. Advised by her mother who heads her family with an iron fist, and surrounded by her famous sisters and brothers, Kim has become one of the most influential people in the world. Multiplying projects, perfumes, beauty products, clothing, collabs of all kinds, advertising partnerships etc., Kim Kardashian is a brand in itself. In 2019, Forbes estimated her fortune at several hundred million dollars, making her the 6th wealthiest woman in the entertainment world (her sister Kylie is in second place behind Taylor Swift).
Her ultra-sophisticated look also inspires the art and fashion world, notably Jean-Paul Goude with whom she “broke the Internet” in 2014 with a “full frontal” nude photo. If her glamorous universe and her incredible lifestyle attract the crowds, the TV show also reveals her intimacy, her doubts, her tears ... We think among other things of the sequence where Kim learns of her husband's hospitalization in 2017, or when she remembers the attack she suffered during Paris Fashion Week in 2016.
And finally, of course, the couple she has formed with Kanye West since 2014, with whom she has had four adorable children with improbable names, is also at the center of attention. And we're not even talking to you when Kanye reaches the White House in 2024…
Love, clash and beauty
We could talk about Kim for hours, but it would forget about the many family members who participate in the program. To the Kardashian siblings were added equally famous sisters, who were still very small at the launch of the show. Since then, Kylie and Kendall have grown well and have even surpassed their elders. The first founded a cosmetic empire and the second became one of the most fashionable models of the end of the 2010s. Sisters who get along like dog and cat and who deliver before the cameras spectacular disputes and regulations thunder account. Latest fact, Kim and Kourtney came to blows last April during the first episode of the 18th season. The reason for this drama? Kourtney could no longer bear to appear in reality television for his family ... We can understand it.
But The Incredible Kardashian Family is also moments of sharing, around children in particular (the future stars of the program), or even emotions, as during the trans coming out of Caitlyn Jenner. She also had her own show: Call me Caitlyn .
Love, power, business, clashes, scandals ... In short, all the perfect elements that a fiction could dream of, but in real life. So a word of warning before embarking on the first two seasons: Keeping Up with the Kardashians has great addictive potential.
