China News Network Lanzhou, May 22 (Song Sen) May 22 is "International Biodiversity Day". During the investigation of bird diversity in Gansu Province, the animal ecology research team of the College of Life Sciences of Lanzhou University photographed a passerine bird in Xicang Township, Luqu County, Gansu Province. Male yellow-browed bunting of Muscidae. This discovery is a new record for the distribution of birds in Gansu, adding a new member to the Gansu bird family.

According to the research team, the bird's forehead, crest, occipital and head sides are black, with a narrow white crown pattern from the forehead to the pillow; the eyebrow pattern is bright yellow, turning white behind the eyes; the upper body is all tan, and the back neck has feathers With chestnut brown fine lines, wide black central stripes on the back; two wings and tail black brown, the outermost two pairs of tail feathers have white wedge-shaped spots, the feathers on the waist and tail are more chestnut red; the feathers on the wings and the inner secondary fly Feather brown; medium and large covered feathers with white tip forming two white wing spots; chin and zygomatic patterns are black; chestnut and chestnut brown, chest and two chests with dark brown stripes; ventral center and tail covered with white feathers.

Yellow-browed buntings are mainly distributed in Japan, South Korea, Laos, North Korea, Mongolia, Russia; in China, from northeast, north China, west to eastern Sichuan and eastern Guizhou, south to Guangdong, Fujian and Taiwan. According to the data, the yellow-browed bunting breeds in the Siberian region north of Lake Baikal in Russia. It winters in southern China and migrates every spring and autumn. The distribution areas of the yellow-browed buntings in the "Gansu Vertebrate Chronicles" and "Chinese Bird Classification and Distribution List (Third Edition)" do not include Gansu.

After reviewing the relevant information, it was confirmed that it was the male of the yellow-browed bunting in the family Finchidae. Photo courtesy of Lanzhou University

The research team said that the data recorded that Huangmei buntings are distributed in Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces adjacent to Gansu, so it is speculated that the observed Huangmei buntings should belong to the migratory birds passing through Gansu during the spring migration. However, the recorded yellow-browed buntings are distributed in the eastern part of the two provinces in Sichuan and Shaanxi, and are far away from the places observed this time. This will need to be continuously observed in southern and eastern Gansu in the next few years to verify that the yellow-browed buntings occasionally get lost Gansu, due to environmental changes, southern and eastern Gansu has become the migration route of the bird.

The animal ecology research team of the College of Life Sciences of Lanzhou University has always attached great importance to the observation and investigation of wildlife diversity. Since 2014, it has cooperated with the Nanjing Institute of Environmental Sciences of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment to establish 17 in Gansu, Ningxia and western Inner Mongolia. County bird diversity observation sample area and three mammal infrared camera observation sample areas.

Through years of continuous investigation and observation of animal diversity in Gansu Province and surrounding provinces, 3 new bird records in Gansu, 3 new bird records in Ningxia and 1 new record in mammals have been reported, and campus bird maps have been edited and published The book "Cuiying Lingyu" and the bird atlas of Liupan Mountain in Ningxia contribute to the promotion and protection of biodiversity.
