Finally a little swim in the sea. Ten municipalities in Martinique can reopen their beaches this Thursday, and two others on Saturday (out of a total of 24 municipalities), the prefecture announced in a press release, after consulting the mayors.

The decision comes as the Martinique administrative court, which has nearly 200 reported cases of coronavirus and 14 deaths, rejected a request Monday to order the prefect to reopen these beaches. The court had argued that the authorization required beforehand “a proposal from the mayor, as well as the establishment by the municipalities of the procedures and controls likely to guarantee compliance” with the barrier measures. However, added the court on Monday, "at this stage, the mayors (…) have reserved their answers when they must find (…) a fair balance between health security and the gradual resumption of activities”.

No meals or breaks on the beach

From now on, the beaches of these 12 municipalities, such as Diamant, Sainte-Marie, Fort-de-France or Trois-Îlets, are authorized "from sunrise at 11 am and then from 4 pm to 6.30 pm, for individual sports activities" such as walking, running, swimming and water sports from the beach.

On the other hand, "static parking, collective and contact sports, organization of meals, transportation and consumption of alcohol as well as any grouping of more than 10 people" are prohibited.

For its part, Guadeloupe announced Wednesday the reopening of the beaches of 19 municipalities.
