First woman elected member of the French Academy in 1980, Marguerite Yourcenar (1903-1987) is the famous author of Hadrian's Memoirs. Emigrated to the United States in 1939, she also developed a passion for black American music, to which she devoted a collection of poems and translations in 1984, Blues and Gospel.
