To date, 144 cases approaching Kawasaki disease have been identified in France. This pathology mainly affecting children worries because it could have a link with Covid-19. But a study by the Public Assistance-Hospitals of Paris (AP-HP) highlights an effective treatment, explained doctor Jimmy Mohamed on Europe 1 Tuesday.

While a nine-year-old child died from a form close to Kawasaki disease, described in young patients who have been in contact with the coronavirus, the Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) conducted a "reassuring" study, reports doctor Jimmy Mohamed on Europe 1 Tuesday.

If France currently has 144 children who contracted a form close to Kawasaki disease, this AP-HP study shows positive effects in the medical management of these children.

Children with overweight and asthma

Carried out on 35 affected children, the study shows that they not only had a "cardiac picture" but also "a digestive picture" causing "abdominal pain and diarrhea". Other points in common between all these children: "they were on average ten years old" and "in a third of the cases, they presented comorbidities, like overweight or asthma", specifies doctor Jimmy Mohamed, who adds that "90 % of these children had a Covid-19 "PCR or positive serology.

According to the doctor, good news could reassure parents. "Once [the children] were treated with immunoglobulins, no deaths occurred," he said. Jimmy Mohamed advises parents to "consult [their] doctor in case of digestive symptoms". "He can reassure you or refer you to a specialist," he says, knowing that "at this time of year, there is almost no gastroenteritis".
