Cannes is focusing on the postcard of its Lérins Islands - Eric Dervaux

  • The city of Cannes announces a recovery plan for its tourist industry hard hit by the epidemic of new coronavirus.
  • Discounted stays will be put on sale at the same time as the deployment of a promotional campaign aimed at French customers.

"Being able to live Cannes in high season as if it were low season" is what the mayor (LR) David Lisnard promises this summer. To revive the tourist machine, seriously seized by the epidemic of new coronavirus, the city of festivals will sell off stays and flirt with French customers with its "local exoticism".

Faced with the “economic and social tragedy” which is confirmed after the cascade cancellation of all the congresses and its very precious film festival, the city has decided to launch a major promotion campaign at 3.3 million euros . In posters and TV spots, Cannes will become “our end of the world”, playing on travel restrictions and its postcard landscapes with, in particular, its two Lérins Islands.

"Nothing can replace a customer"

Deprived this summer of its pyrotechnic festival, which usually brings together several hundreds of thousands of people on the Croisette, and all of its music festivals, the destination will also revise its “outdoor” event proposal. Light shows on the facades and exhibitions are notably planned to "make Cannes a huge stroll". Especially for families.

A total of 5,000 hotel stays will be offered with a four-night package for the price of three in all establishment categories, which are expected to reopen at the start of at least June. The town hall has also decided on two million euros exemption for professionals affected by the health crisis. "Help is needed, but nothing can replace a client," said Mayor LR David Lisnard, who noted Monday still "good news", a jump in reservations for yachts and pleasure boats.

Losses estimated at 500 million euros

The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, the city's economic engine, has been at a complete standstill since March and cancellations of its international meetings (Mipim, MipTV, CanneSeries, Cannes Lions, Festival de Cannes, Tax Free ). Accusing nearly 289.8 million euros in losses, according to figures communicated by the town hall.

"With the shutdown of hotels, restaurants and beaches which will not find full activity due to health protocols, we estimate at 500 million euros the losses recorded by the destination," points David Lisnard. According to the mayor, Cannes, the second city of congresses in France after Paris, is, on its scale, "the most disaster stricken city in France" in terms of the tourism economy. The losses are estimated at 1.2 billion euros for the whole of the Côte d'Azur.
