  • The Serge Ferrari company, located in Isère, has developed a canvas for killing coronaviruses.
  • In a quarter of an hour, 95% of viruses are eliminated.
  • This canvas could be used to cover school chairs, desks or even door handles.

A web capable of destroying coronaviruses. The Serge Ferrari company, specialized in the manufacture of flexible composite materials (generally used in architecture) and established in Isère, has just perfected this new process. "We have brought virucidal properties to our membranes," explains Sébastien Baril, marketing director of the company, who participated in the development of the product. The miracle ingredient? Silver particles.

“They have long been known to have antibacterial properties. The challenge was to be able to integrate them into our products, ”he explains. At the start of the pandemic, the company based in Tour-du-Pin chose to reorient its dedicated research teams in order to find solutions that could stop the spread of the coronavirus. After two months of work, the process tested in an independent VirHealth laboratory in Lyon, would have proven its effectiveness. It has even been patented.

95% of the virus destroyed in a quarter of an hour

"The webs are capable of destroying 95% of viruses in 15 minutes of contact and 99.5% after an hour," explains Sébastien Baril. Today, the idea is to equip them with areas open to the public or with high traffic such as museums, schools, nurseries, offices. And the furniture: restaurant chairs, school desks, door handles for shops, armchairs or grab bars for public transport, metal barriers… "The possibilities are endless," continues the manager. The demands are pouring in and we should be able to carry out the first installations in the coming days. ”

Currently, the company produces 20,000 square meters of this canvas per week. However, capacity could be reassessed upwards according to orders and needs. "For us, it is above all an additional security to fight against the spread of Covid-19. The canvas only kills the virus in case of contact with the membrane. In reality, this solution should not replace the barrier gestures which remain essential, ”concludes Sébastien Baril. Too early to talk about turnover. The group indicates, however, that it works with several communities and companies interested in the product.
