Brazil - Coronavirus: the Latin American giant's debacle?
By: Marie-France Chatin Follow
While the time is in Europe for a cautious release from confinement, it is now America that is in the limelight. The USA is by far the most mourning country on the planet with more than 80,000 deaths. But another country in the south of the continent is now causing a lot of concern, Brazil.
Publicity
This South American giant is, according to some analyzes, the country most contaminated by Covid-19 in the world with more than two million cases while the official data are very far from this figure, with only 170,000 cases mentioned. The country is starting to worry its neighbors, including Argentina, especially since its peak epidemic is not expected until June or July 2020. The Brazilian president has minimized the severity of the crisis from the start. The country is, in part, in denial amid deep political divisions and cacophony between the different levels of power. The recent resignation of Minister of Justice Sergio Moro is a political divorce which Jair Bolsonaro would no doubt have done well. The Brazilian president must now fight for his survival.
