While Italy and Spain have recently taken unilateral decisions concerning the rules applied at the borders, the Interior Minister called on Saturday for collegial decision-making at European level.

Italy decided on Saturday to reopen, from June 3, its borders to tourists from the European Union without imposing a quarantine on them. For its part, Spain has unilaterally imposed a fortnight on anyone coming from abroad. And these initiatives were both coldly welcomed by the Minister of the Interior, Christophe Castaner, on Saturday. "I think it is essential that we can have coordinated decisions at European level on the infra-Schengen, this is not the case today", he regretted.

"Working together in solidarity"

"The unilateral decision by Spain this week, by Italy announced this morning, does not support what we need to do: work together in solidarity," said the Minister of the Interior during a trip to Veules- les-Roses in Seine-Maritime. Little appreciating the Madrid decision, France imposes by reciprocity the same measure of fourteen on travelers coming from Spain. In fact, there is currently very little traffic between the two countries, excluding frontier workers.

Stating that all the necessary measures would be taken to ensure the protection of the French, Christophe Castaner concluded his intervention by saying that he would exchange this weekend with his Italian counterpart, "so that we can adapt our rules".

Almost all of the borders within the European area (Schengen area, European Union and United Kingdom) are subject to restrictions, but the objective is to reopen the borders, with a meeting around the June 15 to decide. The European Commission on Wednesday wanted a "concerted" and "non-discriminatory" reopening of the internal borders of the Union.
