His last trip was fatal to him. The dolphin Zafar, well known to some bathers in Finistère, was found dead a few days ago by a walker on a beach in the Netherlands, reports the NH Nieuws news site in an article spotted by Le Télégramme. The animal had a torn-off fin and was probably the victim of an accidental catch.

According to the information site, the dolphin had left a deserted port of Douarnenez due to the confinement a few days ago. Zafar had followed the schooner Tres Hombres, which was en route to the Netherlands. Accustomed to contact with humans, the dolphin had been seen in the port of Amsterdam and would have even crossed a few locks, before being pushed off.

The animal was well known in several coastal communities of Finistère because it approached very close to men. Zafar was even illustrated by dropping a man who rowed on his tender or by preventing a freediver from regaining the coast. In Penmarc'h and Landévennec, the mayors had signed decrees prohibiting swimming alongside him in order to protect the population.
