Celebrity hunter Joseph Morpelli is going to fall short this year - F. Binacchi / ANP / 20 Minutes

  • The Cannes Film Festival 2020, which was due to open this Tuesday evening on the Croisette, has been canceled.
  • "20 Minutes" went to meet those who are usually behind the scenes of the demonstration.
  • They tell their Fortnight without a festival.

Usually, he is on the other side of the road, trapped behind barriers, his finger on the shutter release of his camera. But this year, Joseph Morpelli, whom 20 Minutes had already met in party time, was allowed to step onto the forecourt of a desperately empty palace. Recognized as one of the figures in the “gang of stools”, this group of ultrasound writers, he is now “in deep depression”.

“We believed in it until the last moment. Then we had to make up our minds, ”he sighs. The Cannes Film Festival, which should have lifted its curtain this Tuesday evening on world cinema, has been canceled. "Note, for many of us, who sometimes come from far away, it will save money," jokes the sixty-something man. And the fate of this 73rd edition, sealed by the Covid-19 epidemic, does not undermine the morale of this "star hunter".

From the red carpet to “painting” at home

José Will, whom 20 Minutes had also seen last year in the basements of the convention center, had to desert. The head of the decor department at the Palais des Festivals is one of the 93% of partially unemployed employees, forced by the cascading elimination of all Cannes events until at least September. "I've been working there for 33 years and it's the first time that I'm going to live a year without a festival," he says.

Usually loaded with the red carpet rolled out on the steps, the pro has devoted himself, these past few days, "to painting work" at home. "It's less glamorous," he jokes. He only found his way to the palace once in two months and it was this Tuesday morning.

“At the initiative of the town hall, we hoisted a tarp to say 'thank you' to the carers and all those who watch over us during this crisis. It is there, on the "cap" of the congress center that the poster for the Cannes Festival is usually displayed.

"Couture" helmets instead of evening dresses

There will therefore be no starlets on the steps this year. And that doesn't do the business of Aline Buffet either. In normal times, at this time of the year, the designer, master craftsman of her state, draws and resumes gala outfits for the happy few. She had to find another activity. For the one 20 Minutes had nicknamed the “queen of the scissors”, the Cannes Film Festival 2020 turned into a “mask festival”.

After having participated in the municipal factory responsible for manufacturing protections for all residents of Cannes, she embarked, with two associates, on a new “couture” activity. “The masks will become fashion accessories for an indefinite period, but probably at least for weeks. So you might as well have pretty ones, ”she says.

Made on demand and with a choice of different fabrics, these new creations can also be covered with lace (under the three regulatory protective layers) with leopard prints and even chains. It has already sold more than 500 in a few days, billed between 12 and 35 euros. And who knows… if the crisis were to last, these creations may end up on the market next year.
