The beach at Palavas, near Montpellier, should be allowed to the public ... but not for sunbathing or putting down your parasol. - N. Bonzom / Maxele Presse

  • The prefect gave the green light to the reopening of the beach at Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone, one of the thirteen coastal municipalities of Hérault.
  • The other municipalities should obtain the same authorization ... with several constraints.
  • The beaches will only be open at certain times of the day (and not at night), which are prohibited for too large groups and for static activities. It will not be possible to put down your towel and sunbathe, at least until June 1, at the risk of being fined.

The beaches of Hérault should reopen this weekend. Many mayors of the 13 coastal municipalities have made the request to the prefect Jacques Witkowski. He is free to make this decision. Interior Minister Christophe Castaner left it to state representatives in the departments and mayors to manage the issue of deconfinement on the beaches.

Around Montpellier, Christian Jeanjean, mayor (DVD) of Palavas-les-Flots, was the first to request the reopening of the coastline. It is the first magistrate of Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone, Robert Segura (DVG), who announced the reopening of two of the three beaches in his town (the naturist beach will remain closed), as of Saturday. But only dynamic activities, such as walking, swimming, fishing, kitesurfing or paddleboarding, will be allowed.

"Static tanning activities will be prohibited"

"This reopening will be subject to some constraints," said the mayor on his Facebook page, to avoid the spread of the Covid-19. “The beaches will be open from 8 am to 8 pm. Groupings of more than ten people will be prohibited. Static activities (such as tanning) will be prohibited. The traffic on the bridge will be alternated, to avoid crossings. There will be no small trains. "

Controls will be carried out by the police services and violators of the regulations will be liable to a fine of 135 euros. These provisions are scheduled to be reviewed no later than June 1.
