Veteran American actor Jerry Stiller, who became famous in film and on Broadway and later in the television series Seinfeld , has died of natural causes at age 92, as reported by his son Ben Stiller on Monday .

Stiller and his wife Anne Meara began writing and starring in comedy routines and performances - both on stage and on television - in the 1960s.

Later, he played Frank, the curmudgeonly father of George Costanza , in the renowned Seinfeld series . A role for which he won the Most Funny Male Appearance Award as a guest actor in a television series at the American Comedy Awards in 1989.

In 1997, he was nominated for an Emmy for that same role.

He also characterized Leah Remini's father in the comedy The King of Queens and starred with his son Ben in Zoolander films .

"I am sorry to report that my father, Jerry Stiller, has died of natural causes," his son wrote in a tweet.

"He was a great father and grandfather, and he was Anne's most dedicated husband for 62 years," she adds, "We will miss him dearly. I love you, Dad."
